Why I left the left

I am a 24-year-old woman currently living in the UK, I have always had an interest in Politics and humanitarian studies… I was a punk, and I enjoyed political anarchy and the feeling of belonging that came with it. I felt as though I belonged to a united front against the seedy underbelly of humanity, every gig I spent thrashing around to men and women screaming about the political injustice of a racist, corporate-capitalist society counted towards the fight… I was an activist, right?

Or was I just another young impressional teen? filled with the angst and rage almost all teenagers feel. A societal misfit who had been pushed to the wayside as a result of neglect, looking for a home or outlet, or even just a sense of purpose. As an adult, I realize that this feeling contributed massively to my psyche. This feeling determined whether or not I would experience codependency or be easily manipulated, or even be emotionally charged to the point of explosion. Humans have a deep biological need to belong, we are social creatures and social interaction is imperative for psychological development, meaning we will always seek the family dynamic, especially if we are lacking it; this biological drive is powerful indeed.

for young people who may feel alienated or have social difficulties, the left offers a community where all your emotions and feelings are valid and heard, along with a promise to abolish the society that made you feel so alone in the first place. So if this was the case, why did I choose to leave? I left because the utopia I was fighting for was not a utopia at all, but rather a slippery slope into totalitarian extremism. I am sure you have heard of the term “red-pilling”; a term used from the matrix that describes a Liberal becoming more right-wing, and after the political division that occurred in 2020 we are seeing the phrase become more and more mainstream as celebrities and academics begin to talk about this.

I patrol the parameter of gen Z, I am the oldest range of the generation that grew up with social media, luckily for me, I spent my childhood up until the age of 10 without the internet. I think this contributes to my ability to detach from the digital propaganda so many young people fall victim to. We have now reached a point where your social media can dictate your job security and are frequently seeing celebrities lose their roles due to being outspoken on social media; hence my alias. Cyberbullying and teen suicide are worse than ever and extreme political ideas are protruding to the surface. I saw a TikTok just last week that showed a teenager talking about longing for a society like the soviet union. The soviet union and the fall of czarist Russia resulted in more deaths than the holocaust, however is regularly romanticized by Marxist teenagers who warp history to fit their own narrative. What a time to be alive!

I see the struggles of women branching out into new societal problems created within the paradox of third-wave feminism. For example, the encouragement of teenagers to partake in sex work as it offers liberation from the patriarchal oppression of female sexuality, again using TikTok as a platform to convey messages such as “How to start an Onlyfans”, or “How to get into sex work”- things originally feminism sort to abolish are now being encouraged with no consideration for the callateral damage. My opinion on this subject is lengthy and complex will be explored in another article yet to be written.

The idea of socialism is something that in nature is very appealing to think about and lures in those with contempt for the current status quo, however when practiced has resulted in absolute obliteration of individual freedoms, again history is not taken into consideration here by the far left, another subject that requires an in-depth analysis as it has the potential to lead to catastrophe. Let us not forget about a certain short mustached German politician who used socialism as an aspect to fuel hateful propaganda. I believe using socialism has always been a political trump card used to gain the younger generation's admiration and vote, I saw it used in the UK election of 2017 by Jeremy Corbyn who is a self-proclaimed Marxist, which did in fact give him the younger generations vote but also ultimately lead to his defeat as I believe the older generation had a polarity response against him even if they initially did not support the conservative party.

I find myself now in a political no man's land, hunkering down behind cement-filled bags in the middle, occasionally peering over the top to watch the two sides fight, wondering what the best course of action may be. As a young person, I struggle to express my concerns to peers in my age group as the majority of far-left extremists belong to my generation whose behaviors resemble that of the devouring mother archetype.

In closing, I left the left because I see contradiction after contradiction lined up before me like an army of brown shirts ready to fight those who disagree without proper debate, I see women pitted against one another more than ever before under the guise of ‘internalized misogyny’, I see teenagers saving up for their 18th birthday to buy roleplay outfits for their Onlyfans accounts, I see the predictions of Bret Weinstein coming to fruition as people lose their jobs to cancel culture and political silencing, and young writers like me afraid to express their individual thoughts due to censorship… And so the descent into madness begins.
